CHAPTER 10 - 12 EVOLUTION WEBQUEST
DIRECTIONS:  You are going to make a PowerPoint Presentation covering the information provided below.
  • YOU MAY NEED TO MAKE MORE THAN ONE SLIDE PER TOPIC GIVEN.
  • LABEL THE TOP OF EACH SLIDE:  SLIDE ONE, SLIDE TWO, (so on and so forth)
  • IF YOU NEED TO MAKE MORE THAN ONE SLIDE PER TOPIC, YOU WILL STILL LABEL BOTH SLIDES "SLIDE FOUR" (for example) BUT LABEL THE SECOND SLIDE: SLIDE FOUR PART TWO.
  • IF A THIRD SLIDE IS NEEDED FOR ANY TOPIC THEN YOU WOULD LABEL YOUR NEXT SLIDE SLIDE FOUR PART THREE (so on and so forth)
TOPIC ONE: Title slide, include name, period and title (EVOLUTION POWERPOINT)
Define Evolution on Slide One as well!

TOPIC TWO: Research and explain how new species form from pre-exising species in evolution.  A paragraph or two should be written to explain this topic.

TOPIC THREE: Explain Catastrophism, Gradualism, and Uniformitarianism and how these ideas relate to evolution.

TOPIC FOUR: Describe Darwin's trip on the HMS Beagle and his observations there. Discuss the Galapagos Islands, and Darwin's finches and turtles.  Explain why the finches and turtles are significant in discussing evolution.  Define genetic variation and adaptation on this slide as well

TOPIC FIVE: Explain the Theory of Natural Selection
Define artificial selection, heritability, and natural selection.  Explain how natural selection works regarding organism's traits, fitness and phenotypes.

TOPIC SIX: The four main principles to the theory of natural selection are: variation, overproduction, adaptation, and descent with modification. Explain each of these four principles and discuss how they explain how evolution can occur.

TOPIC SEVEN: Explain and Define each of the following Evidences of Evolution:
fossils, embryology, homologous structures (give examples), analogous structures (give examples), vestigial structures (give example), paleontology

TOPIC EIGHT: Explain how our understanding of genetics and DNA has influenced our views on evolution. Explain: molecular and genetic (DNA) evidence to support evolution, Hox genes, protein comparisons, or molecular fingerprinting and how it reveals similarities among cell types of different organisms.  How does the genetics of all living things relate to "common descent?"

TOPIC NINE: Explain and Discuss these terms related to Genetic Variation within Populations:
gene pool, allele frequency, mutations, and recombination of alleles.  Why are mutations important in discussing evolution?  Explain why recombination of genes is important in discussing evolution.

TOPIC TEN: Natural selection can change the distribution of a trait in one of three ways.  Explain and define each of these three ways:  directional selection, stabilizing selection, disruptive selection

TOPIC ELEVEN: Show sample graphs demonstrating each of these three:
directional selection, stabilizing selection, and disruptive selection

TOPIC TWELVE: Explain and define these terms related to "Other Mechanisms of Evolution:" (Include pictures)
gene flow, genetic drift, sexual selection in evolution

TOPIC THIRTEEN: Explain and define these terms related to "Other Mechanisms of Evolution:"
(include pictures) bottleneck effect, founder effect

TOPIC FOURTEEN: Explain and Define these terms related to "Speciation through Isolation:"
(include pictures) reproduction isolation (behavioral isolation, geographic isolation, and temporal isolation).  What does speciation mean?  Explain several things that could cause speciation to occur.   How can reproductive isolation lead to speciation?

TOPIC FIFTEEN: Explain and Define the Hardy Weinberg Principle.Use several slides to explain and describe the Hardy Weinberg Principle. In Hardy Weinberg genotype frequencies stay the same if five conditions are met.  What are these five conditions? List all five. Explain what these five conditions mean in relation to the Hardy Weinberg Principle.

TOPIC SIXTEEN: Explain and Define these terms related to "Patterns in Evolution:" (include pictures)
convergent evolution, divergent evolution, coevolution

TOPIC SEVENTEEN: Explain and Define these terms related to "Patterns in Evolution:" (include pictures)
Punctuated equilibrium and adaptive radiation.

TOPIC EIGHTEEN: Explain how natural selection plays a role in causing biological resistance (antibiotic resistance).  Explain natural selection and biological resistance in the use of pesticides and influenza vaccines.

TOPIC NINETEEN: Explain and Define these terms related to "Fossil Dating:" (include pictures)
Relative dating and radiometric dating (explain how isotopes are used in radiometric dating)

TOPIC TWENTY: Explain and Define this term related to "Fossil Dating:" (include pictures)
Half-life

TOPIC TWENTY-ONE (Is Optional, do not have to do it) Discuss your personal views on evolution.
